Light duty towing is likely the most recognized form of vehicle towing as it involves the towing of vehicles weighing less than 10,000 pounds. There are two classifications of light duty towing:
Class 1 –Vehicles weighing less than 6,000 pounds and driving on four tires.
This category describes passenger cars, most sport utility vehicles, and minivans and smaller pick up trucks such as Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10.
Class 2 –Vehicles weighing between 6,001 and 10,000 pounds, driving on four tires.
Vehicles found in this category include larger sport utility vehicles such as Ford Expedition, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, full size pickups and full size vans.
Towing in this class is accomplished by either a flat bed wrecker or a conventional wrecker equipped with a wheel lift.
